January 21, 2012:
ACTE has been working tirelessly to ensure that Perkins was not on the chopping block again in 2011. On December 17, 2011, Congress finalized a funding package that contains the remaining nine appropriations bills for Fiscal Year (FY) 2012, including the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill. The legislation passed the House and Senate with bipartisan support. In this bill, Perkins is level-funded! This is fantastic news!

On February 11, the House Appropriations Committee introduced a new FY 2011 appropriations bill, H.R. 1. The legislation completely eliminates funding for the Perkins Tech Prep program for the 2011-2012 school year, an 8 percent reduction in overall Perkins funds, and makes drastic cuts across other education and workforce development programs. This bill is separate from the president’s budget proposal, released today for the following year, FY 2012, which suggests even deeper cuts to Perkins. ACTE has launched a blog series seeking comments on Perkins reauthorization, along with a Web poll, at http://www.acteonline.org/ctepolicywatchblog.aspx?id=15390&blogid=3512.
A new blog and question will be posted about every two weeks for the next few months so that they can collect input on different issues of interest. You can also access the poll from the front page of the ACTE Web site.
