I am at the WBEA Conference in Newport Beach, California (tough job, but somebody has to do it). The weather is just as nice as Phoenix, except the beach is closer.
There is a lot of talk here about bringing the regional organizations and their websites into the 21st Century. The ABEA website received positive comments from the WBEA Webmaster – yeah!
So then I thought about activity on our Facebook and Twitter accounts. You didn’t know that we had Facebook and Twitter? Let’s get into the 21st Century!

Is your head in the cloud? Well, maybe your HEAD isn’t in the cloud, but you should be aware of what can BE DONE in the cloud. What is the cloud you say? It is where technology is moving so that you can create, store, and share files.
For example, I used to create my lesson plans and curriculum on either my school computer or my home computer. Then, when I went away for the summer I would have to remember to download the files I wanted to update on my flash drive to take with me and my laptop. Not anymore. I downloaded “Dropbox” on both my home computer and my laptop. Dropbox stores my files “in the cloud” so I can access them on my laptop wherever we are. It sure saves a lot of time – and frustration.

If you didn’t attend the ABEA Winter Social on Saturday, January 21, 2012, you missed a strikingly great time. There were numerous gutter balls, many strikes and spares, lots to eat, and constant High Fives!! Even though the scores would have looked better for 18 holes of golf, that didn’t stop anyone from working on knocking those pins down. The group was divided into 2 teams, and competition was fierce; but congratulations were sincere, and rolling a ball or two on behalf of a teammate or an opponent proved that this sporting event met its goal of team building and just plain old “having fun.” The Brave Bowlers were

If you’ve ever wondered what kind of lessons to leave for a sub, here are two great ideas that are easy to follow. Karen Klein teaches a career exploration/business class to Freshmen at Metro Tech High School. The students watched a Biography video on Conrad Hilton and took notes on a “Cornell Notes” worksheet. After they took notes, they were to write a sentence on what they learned, and then answer an “essential” question about why they thought Conrad Hilton was successful. The sub collected the completed worksheets at the end of class. Chris Liebelt-Garcia at Metro Tech teaches a business management class to Juniors and Seniors. She created a variety of folders containing review worksheets on topics such as payroll, the purchase order/invoice process, and merchant discounts. The students divided into teams, one team for each folder. After working for 15-20 minutes on one folder, the teams rotated to another folder until they had completed all the worksheets in all the folders. Answer keys were available for the students to check their own work. These worksheets prepared the students for their final exam for the unit they were studying. These are great lessons for subs because they are easy to follow and engage the students.
